New research has found that applying pressure to your skin can activate the stem cells that are stored in reservoirs in your skin and this can improve its appearance measurably.
In a collaborative 2018 study, Shiseido found that stem cells gather around the skin's oil glands. These stem cells are the origin of dermal fibroblasts which are responsible for skin elasticity.
The research team investigated what the effect of putting pressure on the skin, tapping and stretching of the skin would be on these stem cell reservoirs.
They found that these actions stimulated the skin to generate and release more stem cells from the reservoirs. These cells did not go to waste; they connected to one another, formed a network, became fully functional and started to make new collagen. And I think we all know by now that new collagen translates to rejuvenated skin.
This should give us a renewed appreciation for and understanding of the benefits that can be had by going for regular beauty treatments.
So, as soon as beauty salons are allowed to open for business again, we should support our local beauticians by treating ourselves to a facial massage.
