Chemical Free Cosmetics? They don’t exist!

Posted by Melinda Fick on

A little while ago, I saw a facebook advertisement by a skin care company claiming that their products were chemical free. I could not decide if I should laugh, cry or be angry, because if this was possible, they’d be selling you … nothing! So, do they want to mislead consumers by deliberately lying to them or are they just plain ignorant?

Everything about you and around you are made up of chemicals. Your body consists of water, carbon and other elements. Water is molecules of hydrogen and oxygen, which are chemical elements. The air that you breathe is mainly nitrogen and oxygen; again, chemicals. Sugar, salt, spice and all things nice, I can go on and on, but I’m sure you get my point.

The only things that are not chemical are things like electricity, light and magnetism. So, your “chemical free” cosmetic product should then be composed of these (and only these) for this claim to be true and that's highly unlikely. Besides, there will be another problem; how will this “chemical free” product be packaged since glass, paper, plastic and all recycled items are also all made up of (drum roll, please) chemicals!

You, the consumer should not be lied to and deserve accurate information to help you make informed decisions.

If there are certain ingredients that you would like to avoid, simply check the ingredients labels of any product to confirm if it is in there or not.

There is a lot of fearmongering in the media for all kinds of reasons, so use your critical thinking, do some homework and decide for yourself.
